Materials

  • Worsted or thicker yarn in 2 colors
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Small star bead or embellishment (optional)
  • Sewing needle and thread (optional)
  • Keychain ring or lobster clasp

Abbreviations – US Terms

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • inc – increase (work 2 sc in the same stitch)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Note: Each round begins with ch 1. The ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Join each round with a sl st to the first sc.

Witch Hat

Using your main hat color, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc into the magic ring. Join with sl st. (6 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in next st, inc in next st. Repeat around. Join. (9 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (9 sts)

Round 4: Ch 1. Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st. Repeat around. Join. (12 sts)

Round 5: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (12 sts)

Round 6: Ch 1. Sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st. Repeat around. Join. (15 sts)

Round 7: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (15 sts)

Round 8: Ch 1. Sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st. Repeat around. Join. (18 sts)

Round 9: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (18 sts)

Change to your contrasting color.

Fasten off the contrasting color.

Crochet the Brim

Rejoin your main hat color.

Brim Round 1: Ch 1. Sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st. Repeat around. Join. (30 sts)

Brim Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st. Repeat around. Join. (36 sts)

Brim Round 3: Ch 1. Sc in next 5 sts, inc in next st. Repeat around. Join. (42 sts)

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Add the Decoration

Sew a small star bead, button, or Halloween embellishment onto the contrasting band of the witch hat. You can also leave the hat plain for a simpler look.
