Crochet Pouch Drawstring Bag

Crocheting your pouch drawstring bag is not only a fun and relaxing craft, but it also results in a functional, personalized accessory that can be used for storing small items. Whether new to crochet or an experienced crafter, this crochet drawstring bag pattern is an excellent choice. With a video tutorial and a free crochet pattern, you can quickly learn how to create a beautiful, sturdy pouch for personal use or as a thoughtful gift. Cotton yarns and basic stitches like single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) make this project perfect for beginners. Let’s dive into this easy-to-follow guide and start creating!

To begin, you’ll need a mm crochet hook and your yarn choice. Cotton yarns or cotton blends are great options for their durability and natural feel, but you can experiment with different yarn weights or even raffia yarn for a unique texture. This crochet pouch drawstring bag pattern uses basic stitches like single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), and slip stitch (sl st), making it a manageable project for all skill levels.

Start by creating a magic circle and working in continuous rounds to form the base of your bag. Insert your hook into the first chain and continue working in the round until the base reaches your desired size. From there, you can work up the sides of the bag using single crochet stitches or a combination of double crochet stitches to add texture. If desired, add a beautiful star stitch or a puff stitch for decorative accents.

Abbreviations:

ch=chain

sc=single crochet

hdc=half double crochet

sl st=slip stitch

Measures 4.5 x 5 inches

For crochet, I recommend using an I hook, but you can easily adjust the size by using a larger hook, adding more chains, or working with half double crochet (HDC) or double crochet (DC) stitches for a bigger result.

Rnd 1: chain 16, sc in the second chain from the hook, sc in each chain across, in the last chain, work 3 sc, Do Not Turn, work on the opposite side.

sc to the other end, end with 2 sc. use a stitch marker.

Rnds 2–15: sc in each stitch around for 15 rounds.

Rnd 15: sl st, ch 4, skip a stitch, *dc, ch 1, skip a stitch, *Repeat around, sl st on top of the chain 3.

Rnd 16: ch 2, *hdc in the chain 1 space, hdc in the dc, *Repeat around,  sl st, Fasten off, Weave in your ends.

Drawstring:

chain 50, Make 2, I hook

Take the drawstring and loop in and out of each dc around the entire dc on one side, then repeat on the other side. Tie the ends together so it creates a loop on each side. Then you should be able to pull it closed.

After completing the main body of the bag, it’s time to add the drawstring closure. Work in the back loop for a neat, textured finish, and create a drawstring pouch by weaving in a drawstring closure that can be cinched tight. This simple yet stylish closure ensures your small items stay secure, while the stitch marker helps you keep track of your progress.

Once your crochet pouch drawstring bag is complete, you’ll have a versatile, charming bag for storing lavender sachets, small trinkets, or cosmetics. The project is fun and provides a great way to practice essential crochet techniques like basic stitches, increases, and working in continuous rounds. Whether gifting or keeping it for yourself, this project will impress you. If you’re looking for more inspiration, check out the free crochet pattern linked in the description, or grab the written pattern in PDF format for easy reference.
