Crocheting is an excellent craft that offers endless possibilities for creating beautiful and functional items. One essential technique in crochet is the standing double crochet, which is used to start a new row without the traditional chain-three and double crochet combination. In this tutorial, we will guide you through crocheting a standing double crochet, providing step-by-step instructions to help you master this valuable skill.

I will show you how to do a standing double crochet instead of having a chain three and a double crochet. I will show you how to do just one double crochet standing alone, so you have your stitch here without two stitches to start each row, just like how these rows start with one stitch. So, instead of the two stitches together, I will show you how to do a standing.
So, you will take your yarn and wrap it around your hook twice. Then, you’re going to insert it into your stitch. You can insert it in this beginning stitch or this stitch here. I’m skipping each stitch to show you as an example. It doesn’t matter if it is a straight edge; you can place it right in that beginning stitch. It just depends on how you would like to start your stitch.
You’re going to wrap your yarn twice around your hook, and then insert your hook. After that, you grab the yarn and want to keep these ends somewhat taut and tight as you do this. Then you’re going to yarn over, pull through two, just like a double crochet – yarn over, pull through two. So you’ve created your standing double crochet and have this tail. You’ll have to take your yarn needle and weave it at the back when you’re finished with your row.
Then, you’re just going to continue with your double crochet. So, you yarn over and insert your hook, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, pull through two, and just continue with a double crochet across each stitch. In the back, you will have this tail; you can take your yarn needle and weave it in. It depends on how you like to weave it in; I would take my yarn needle and then weave it in the back so it can’t be seen and it’s secure. You can do that a few times to get rid of that tail. Then, you just cut that yarn and continue until you reach the end.
To start, yarn over twice, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull through, then yarn over and pull through two. I’m skipping this beginning and then doing it in the next. You can, of course, go right into that stitch because this is the stitch I skipped, depending on where you would like the double crochet. Hold onto this tail tightly, and then go into your next stitch to work your double crochet. Repeat this process.
After that, you can pull this tightly, and when you finish your row, you can go back and take your yarn needle to weave in the ends, as I showed you before. You can do a standing crochet on your rows, so you don’t have to do two together. It will look like this instead of two stitches.

After creating the standing double crochet, a yarn tail will be hanging at the back. To secure it, use a yarn needle to weave it in. This step ensures that the tail is hidden and your work remains tidy.
With your standing double crochet in place, you can continue crocheting your project as usual, working into the stitches as needed. Remember to maintain even tension for a consistent and neat finish.
Mastering the standing double crochet is a valuable skill for any crocheter, as it eliminates the need for a chain three at the beginning of each row, resulting in cleaner and more professional-looking work. You can seamlessly incorporate standing double crochets into your crochet projects with practice. Happy crocheting, and enjoy the flexibility and creativity this technique brings to your craft!
