I’m going to show you how to make the star stitch. This stitch can be used to create afghans, washcloths, and more. It’s done in multiples of two plus one. This is the back of the stitch.

Now, I’m using an H hook and purple yarn. Your hook size should match the type of yarn you’re using. In this tutorial, I’m using impeccable purple yarn. So, you will work in multiples of two and then add one more. For example, I’m going to chain 14, which is 14 in groups of two plus one, totaling 15 chains in all.

To start the star stitch, insert your hook in the second chain from the hook, pull up the yarn, and repeat this process, inserting your hook into the next chain until you have six loops on your hook. Then, yarn over and pull through all six loops, followed by chaining one to create your first star. In the center of the eye of the star, insert your hook, go behind the last post of your star stitch, and insert your hook in the previous stitch. In the next two chains, insert your hook and pull up until you have six loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all six loops, and chain one. Continue this pattern by repeating the steps in each stitch until you reach the end. Finish the row with a half-double crochet in the last stitch.

Chain one, turn your work, and start the next row with a single crochet in the first stitch. Continue by single crocheting in the eye of the previous star, then work two single crochets across each eye. Finish the row with one single crochet in the last stitch.

For a color change, slip-stitch your new color on and chain two with the new color. Then, pick up the loop from the front of the second chain from the hook and the back of that same chain. Continue by going into the following three single crochets, then yarn over and pull through all six loops, followed by chaining one. Repeat the star stitch pattern as previously described.

For the rest of the pattern, alternate between the rows of star stitches and the rows of single crochets with increases in the centers of the star stitches. You can continue this pattern to create your desired length.

I hope this tutorial helps you master the star stitch. Please subscribe for more crochet tutorials and patterns.
