Cro­chet Hat sizes with this HDC pat­tern:
New­born baby head cir­cum­fer­ence: 13″ — 14″, Hat height = 6″= F hook,
Baby — 3 to 6 months, Head Cir, 14″ — 17 “, Hat height= 6.5 — 7”= G hook,
baby 6–12 months, 16″-19″ head cir., hat length=7″=H hook,
tod­dler-preschool­er (12 months‑3 yrs), 18″-20″ head cir., hat length=7.5″ =I hook,
child 3–10 yrs, head cir., 19″-20 1/2 ““, hat length=8”=J hook,

teens, head cir., 20 1/2″-22″, hat length, 8.5″= K hook

Sup­plies:

Red Heart Blue and White yarn, or what­ev­er you pre­fer. The stiffer the yarn the bet­ter.
J and I hook
Yarn nee­dle
I made this for my 6‑year-old daugh­ter; her head mea­sures 21 inch­es around. All sizes are list­ed above. Now, use this pat­tern below for the oth­er sizes, but use a dif­fer­ent hook size and stop at the length list­ed above. Then add the band the same way as post­ed below, but go small­er on the hook size with the band.

 

Abbre­vi­a­tions: dc=double cro­chet sc=single cro­chet sl st=slip stitch ch=chain, hdc=half dou­ble cro­chet

 
Instruc­tions:  J hook, ch 4, sl st, to form a ring.
rnd 1. ch 2 (count as one hdc), work 9 hdc in the ring, sl st. (10 hdc)
rnd 2. ch 2, work a hdc in the same stitch as the ch 2, then work 2hdc in each stitch around, Slip Stitch (start to use a mark­er) (20 hdc)
rnd 3. *work a hdc in the next stitch, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, con­tin­ue around, no slip stitch or chain, (I would use a mark­er so you can keep track of your increased rounds) (30 hdc)
rnd 4. *work a hdc in the next 2 stitch­es, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, con­tin­ue around. (40 hdc)
rnd 5. *work a hdc in the next 3 stitch­es, 2hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, con­tin­ue around. (50 hdc)
rnd 6. *work a hdc in the next 4 stitch­es, 2 hdc in the next stitch, *repeat around, con­tin­ue around. (60 hdc)
rnd 7. *work a hdc in each stitch around,*repeat until you hat mea­sures 8 inch­es long, (will be longer on short­er for a big­ger or small­er size head, see above for sizes),

Fin­ish off with a slip stitch.

Band: 
With White yarn slip stich your white yarn. Hdc in the same stitch as the sl st, then hdc around, sl st.
Next Round in the band: With Blue yarn, sl st blue yarn, hdc in the same stitch as the sl st, *work 2 hdc in the next hdc, hdc in the next hdc, *Repeat around, (work with out a slip stitch now.)
Next Round: *Work a hdc in each hdc around, *Repeat around
Next Round: *Work 2hdc in the next hdc, work a hdc in the next 3 hdc, *Repeat around
Next 3 Rounds:  In the next 3 rounds, *Work a hdc in each hdc around in the next 3 rounds.

Last Round: With White yarn, sl st with your white yarn, sc in the same stitch as the slip stitch, sc in each hdc around, Now Fas­ten off and Weave in the ends.

The Top of the Hat: 
This will make the dent to make it look like a cow­boy hat. At the cen­ter begin­ning part of that in Round 1, Start there, and on both sides go to the end of Round 3. Now take both sides of end of Round 3 and fold it togeth­er and Sew it togeth­er. Sew it togeth­er about 4 — 5 times to secure it,  just like the pic­tures above. Then fas­ten off and Weave in the ends.
Curl the ends with your hands of the band to make it look more like a cow­boy or cow­girl hat!
