Materials

Yarn in your desired ghost color
3.5 mm crochet hook
Small amount of black yarn for the eyes
Yarn needle
Scissors

Abbreviations

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
inc = 2 sc in the same stitch

Ghost Body

Rnd 1: Ch 7 loosely. Work 2 sc in the first ch, sc in each of the next 4 ch, and 5 sc in the last ch. Continue working along the opposite side of the foundation chain. Sc in each of the next 4 ch, then work 2 sc in the same ch where the first increase was made. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch 1.

Rnd 2: Work an increase in each of the first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Work an increase in each of the next 4 sts. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Work an increase in each of the last 2 sts. Join with a sl st to the first st. Ch 1. At this point, you have the basic ghost body. The original tutorial uses these two rounds for a small ghost. For a larger ghost, you can add another increasing round or use thicker yarn and a larger crochet hook.

First Arm

Sl st in each of the next 5 sts. Ch 4. Working back along the chain:

Sl st in the first ch.
Sc in the next ch.
Hdc in the next ch.

Sl st into the next stitch on the ghost body to attach the arm.

Bottom of Ghost

Sl st in each of the next 5 sts to move toward the bottom of the ghost. Work:

1 sc in the next st.
1 hdc in the next st.
3 dc in the next st.

Ghost Tail

Ch 4. Working back along the chain:

Sl st in the first ch.
Sc in the next ch.
Hdc in the next ch.
Dc into the center/base area indicated by the previous dc section.

Sl st into the second available stitch along the body to secure the tail. Sl st in approximately the next 3 sts, or until you are positioned for the second arm.

Second Arm

Ch 4. Working back along the chain:

Sl st in the first ch.
Sc in the next ch.
Hdc in the next ch.

Sl st into the next stitch of the ghost body to secure the arm. Continue working sl sts around the edge until you reach the beginning of the round. Ch 1, fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Eyes

Cut two short pieces of black yarn. Tie a small knot in the center of one strand to create the first eye. Thread one end through a yarn needle and bring the yarn through the ghost where you want the eye positioned. Bring the second end through nearby, catching a small amount of the ghost yarn so the knot cannot pull through the crochet opening. Tie the two ends securely on the back. Repeat for the second eye. Adjust the knots so both eyes are approximately the same size.

Finishing

Weave in all remaining yarn ends. If the opening created at the bottom of the ghost is larger than you would like, use the yarn tail to make a small stitch across the opening and gently pull it closed.
