**Get­ting Start­ed**
Before div­ing into this project, ensure your mate­ri­als are ready. You’ll need worsted-weight yarn in dif­fer­ent col­ors, a size J (6 mm) cro­chet hook, a yarn nee­dle, and a stitch mark­er. The cro­chet hook size and yarn weight can be adjust­ed for a per­fect fit.

It mea­sures 19–20 inch­es, so I made it for my 4‑year-old.
Length: 7 inch­es, not includ­ing the ear flaps. Use a small­er hook for a small­er size or a larg­er hook for a larg­er hat.

H hook
G hook
Orange, white, and brown yarn.

Instruc­tions:

Orange yarn for the hat

rnd 1: Work 11 dc in a Mag­ic Cir­cle, sl st on top of the chain 3. ‑11 dc

rnd 2. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in same st. as join­ing, 2dc in each dc around. join with sl st on top of chain 3. ‑22 dc
rnd 3. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), *2dc in next dc, dc in the next dc, Repeat from *around, join with sl st. ‑33 dc
rnd 4. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in the next dc, 2dc in the next dc, *dc in the next two dc, 2dc in the next dc, Repeat from *around, join with sl st. ‑44 dc
rnd 5. ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in the 2 next two dc, 2dc in the next dc, *dc in the next 3 dc, 2dc in the next dc. Repeat from * around, join with sl st. ‑55 dc
rnds 6‑desired length (lengths are list­ed above), Ch 3, (Counts as first Dc), dc in each dc around, sl st to join. ‑55 dc, Repeat this until your hat reach­es 7 inch­es or for your desired size and length. Fas­ten off and Weave in the ends.
Ear flaps: If you would like to add ear flaps
Make 2
H hook, orange yarn
1st ear flap, you can slip stitch onto the side of the hat with your orange yarn, and begin the dc stitch­es. (like to have the seam in the back of the hat, so I did the ear flap on the side of the hat)
2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in dc direct­ly across from the last dc from the oth­er ear flap. Fol­low the direc­tions below for both ear flaps.
Row 1. ch 2, dc in the next 11 dc stitch­es, turn. ‑11 sts
Row 2. ch 2, dc2tog. dc in the next 6 stitch­es. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. ‑9
Row 3. ch 2, dc2tog, dc in the next 4 stitch­es, dc2tog, dc in the last st, turn ‑7
Row 4. ch 2, dc2tog, dc in the next 2 stitch­es. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. ‑5
Row 5. ch 2, dc2tog twice, dc in last st. cut yarn and pull through ‑3
To braid from the cen­ter of the ear flap at the bot­tom, use orange and white yarn. Make a sl st in the cen­ter of the bot­tom of the ear flap and chain 30. Then, sl st it off and cut the yarn.

White and Orange yarn
H hook, Make two white tri­an­gles and two orange tri­an­gles
ch 8
Rnd 1. sc in 2nd chain from the hook, (7sc)
Rnd 2. ch 1, sc in each stitch across, (7sc)
Rnd 3. ch 1, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 stitch­es, sc2tog (5 sc)
Rnd 4. ch 1, sc2tog, sc in the next stitch, sc2tog (3 sc)
Rnd 5. ch 1, sc in the next 3 stitch­es (3 sc)
Rnd 6. ch 1, sc2tog, sc in the last stitch, (2 sc)
Rnd 7. ch 1, sc2tog (1 sc), Fas­ten off.
Do this twice: Place the white tri­an­gle on top of the orange tri­an­gle and hdc around the white edge tri­an­gle with orange yarn. Fas­ten off. Then, place the ear on top of the hat, 2 inch­es apart.
Eyes:
Make 2 or you can use two but­tons for eyes instead
Brown yarn
G hook
ch 2
work 6 in the 2nd chain from the hook, fas­ten off, and attach the eyes above the muz­zle about 2 inch­es apart.
Muz­zle:
H hook
ch 2, work 5 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook (5sc)
rnd 1. 2sc in each stitch around, sl st. (10sc)
rnd 2. *1sc in the next stitch, 2sc in the next stitch, *Repeat around. sl st. (15sc)
rnd 3. *sc in the next two stitch­es, 2sc in the next stitch, *Repeat. sl st. (20sc)
rnd 4. *sc in the next three stitch­es, 2sc in the next stitch, *Repeat. sl st. (25sc)
rnd 5. *sc in the next 4 stitch­es, 2sc in the next stitch, *Repeat around. sl st (30sc)
Fas­ten off.

Nose: G hook, brown yarn, ch 2, work 8 sc in the sec­ond chain from the hook. With a yarn nee­dle, sew the nose on the cen­ter of the muz­zle. Stuff the muz­zle with stuff­ing or yarn and place it below the eyes in the cen­ter of the hat.

**Hat Height and Slouch**
For the desired hat height, con­tin­ue work­ing sin­gle cro­chet stitch­es in the back loops. Whether you want a slouchy hat or a more fit­ted one, you can adjust the height accord­ing­ly.
