In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through creating an oval base for your baskets and bags, measuring 11 inches by three and a half inches. I used an I hook for this project, but you can adjust the hook size based on your preference. The pattern for this project is available below. This video is part of a more extensive bag-making series, and the first part focuses solely on creating the oval base. If you want to explore the video more, I can link it to the description. Remember that the 11-inch measurement is suitable for an eye hook, and if you want to make it bigger, I recommend using a larger hook size.

Here’s a clear, step-by-step crochet pattern version of the instructions you provided, formatted to be easy to follow:

🧶 Crochet Pattern: Oval Base Using Half-Double Crochet (HDC)

Skill Level: Beginner
Stitch Used: Half-Double Crochet (HDC)
Hook Size: As recommended for your yarn
Yarn: Any weight yarn (adjust hook accordingly)

🪡 Stitches & Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • inc – increase (2 hdc in same stitch)

Pattern Instructions

Creating the Oval Base:

  1. Start: Make a slip knot and chain 27 (this is 25 + 2 for turning).
  2. Row 1 – Foundation Row:
    • HDC into the 3rd ch from hook.
    • HDC in each ch across. (You will make 25 HDC in total before the end chain.)
    • In the last ch, work 5 HDC into the same stitch.
(This turns the corner and brings you to the other side of the chain.)
  3. Other Side of Chain (Still Row 1):
    • HDC in the next 23 stitches (on the opposite side of the starting chain).
    • In the last ch (same as where your first HDC was), work 4 HDC to complete the oval.
    • Join with a sl st to the first HDC to close the round.

Round 2 – Expanding the Oval Base:

  1. Ch 2, (does not count as a stitch here).
  2. Work the following:
    • HDC in the next 23 sts.
    • In the next 5 sts, work:
      • 2 HDC, 1 HDC, 2 HDC, 1 HDC, 2 HDC (9 HDC total). (This forms the rounded end.)
    • HDC in the next 23 sts.
    • In the next 4 sts, work:
      • 2 HDC, 1 HDC, 2 HDC, 1 HDC (6 HDC total).
    • Join with a sl st to the first HDC.

Optional: Add More Increase Rounds

You may repeat another round, increasing proportionally at the rounded ends:

  • Add 2 HDC into every other stitch around the curve.
  • Work even (1 HDC in each st) along the straight edges.

Final Round (Before Moving to Puff Stitches or Body of Project):

  1. Ch 2, then:
    • HDC in each stitch around, with no increases this round.
    • Join with a sl st to first HDC.

 Next Step:

After completing the oval base, continue into your puff stitch or body section as desired.
